New Year's Eve in New York City
New Year's Eve 2026 is a Thursday, and the ball descends at 11:59pm. Listings below cover December 26 through January 1, 2027.
New Year's Eve in New York splits two ways: a ticket to a room with a band and a midnight toast, or eight hours standing in a pen in Times Square with no bathroom. Both are here. One of them is better.

About a million people stand in Times Square on December 31 and the ball descends at 11:59pm. Here is what the people who have done it will tell you, and what the official guidance has said in recent years.
- The pens fill from the afternoon. Crowds have formed by early afternoon, if not earlier, and access is first come, first served. There is no ticket and no assigned spot.
- There are no public bathrooms. This is the fact that decides it for most people. You are in a pen for eight or nine hours.
- Backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, folding chairs, blankets, large coolers and alcohol have all been prohibited, and bags are searched.
- There is an accessible viewing area, listed in recent years at 44th Street and Broadway, with a sign language interpreter.
These rules are from NBC New York's guidance published in December 2022 for the 2023 ball drop. They have been stable for years, but they are set by the NYPD annually and we are not the organizer. Confirm the current year's rules before you go.
If you want to see the ball and not do the pen: it is visible from several blocks up Seventh Avenue, and the whole thing is on television with a better view. The city also runs fireworks in Prospect Park and Central Park at midnight, both free, both far more pleasant.
The better version, which is a ticket
New York's rooms do New Year's Eve properly, and it is the one night of the year when a bar band becomes an event. The pattern: the jazz clubs run two or three sets with a toast at midnight and charge accordingly, the mid-size rock rooms book a local band with a following rather than a touring act, and the dance venues go until the trains are running normally again. Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Village Vanguard and Birdland all run New Year's programming most years, and they sell out early.
Shows go on sale from about November, so an empty listing in October means nothing. Check back.
Getting home
The subway runs all night, every night, which is the single best thing about New Year's Eve here compared to any other American city. Service is heavy and stations near Times Square close to entry when they get full. Walk ten blocks to a different line rather than queue, and do not plan on a car: large parts of midtown are closed to traffic.
